Introduction to Cornea Donation

A Lifesaving Gesture

Cornea donation is a transformative act that restores sight to those with corneal blindness, especially in areas like Pakistan with high blindness rates. It’s a beacon of hope, offering renewed vision to many in need.

This act of donation is more than a medical procedure; it’s a symbol of empathy and connection. Donors leave a legacy that allows others to see the world anew, turning despair into hope and making a significant difference in someone’s life.

The Burden of Preventable Blindness in Pakistan

A Public Health Challenge with a Treatable Solution

Blindness remains a major public health challenge in Pakistan. Current estimates indicate that approximately 1.5 million people live with bilateral blindness, while up to 3.0 million people are affected by unilateral blindness or severe visual loss in one eye, resulting in significant disability, reduced productivity, and long-term dependency.
Of this burden, an estimated 250,000 people suffer from corneal blindness, a condition that is largely preventable or reversible through timely cornea transplantation. Despite the availability of effective surgical treatment, the severe shortage of donated corneas continues to deprive thousands of patients or restored sight.

Strengthening cornea donation awareness and establishing structured, hospital-based retrieval systems is therefore not only a humanitarian imperative, but a
